A seven month dance workshop in Tenerife Spain for professional dancers,
actors and other artists.
The intention is to give the dancer possibilities to develop a broad and
efficient scenic expression, to interpret and describe the body as unavoidable
and insistent in all manifestations, even behind the most refined philosophy.
The dancer may achieve a high standard as a performer by training only the
physical, but he can reach this high standard and way beyond with less effort,
less struggle, and, if any at all, less injuries by integrating the landscapes
of the mind and the spirit as active parts of his daily discipline.
Butoh is a concept of dance/movement, about placing oneself as a performer
in the now, where everything is, to be able to manipulate the physical body
and consciously manipulate the energy that moves and surrounds it. As a
result, when the performer moves, it is something more than the individual
moving. Butoh is ultimately about being present: the dancer placing himself
where he has what could be called a free body, becoming a space of controlled
energy and transformations.
When he trains the body, the dancer confronts his culture and the history
of past generations carried by the cells of the body. As they come alive
through gestures and movements in the dance, one might say, that, if the
dancer is from Iceland, it becomes and Icelandic dance, or if he is an aboriginal
from Australia, it becomes an Australian dance.
Performance is perceived as an opportunity to create rooms for the audience
to experience themselves in, to become present in. The choreography is fleeting,
like a path in a dream, making one performance slightly different from the
next, bringing a distinct freshness and life to the stage. If a certain
image or character is desired to appear, it is reached with inner pictures,
manipulation of energy, imaginations and dance techniques.
The dancer is always in the process of being; energy, history, costume,
sound, light and set design coming together presenting a vast space of possibilities.

- American Ballet Intensives announces our upcoming Winter Intensive at
California State University, Long Beach,
December 26 to December 30, 2006 for dancers ages 10 through 25.
American Ballet Intensives is an intensive ballet workshop providing serious
students the opportunity to study with professionals in the field. The benefits
are numerous and include: a customizable program to fit each individual
school, an ideal format for younger dancers preparing for their first summer
intensive, or for advanced dancers seeking a "pre-summer brush-up"
for their technique, small class sizes to facilitate individual attention,
live piano accompaniment, and the prestigious world-class faculty of Warren
Conover, Melissa Hale Coyle, Steven Hyde, Lorin Johnson, Charles Maple,
Colleen O'Callaghan, Amy Rose, and Denise Warner-Limoli. Laurence Pech,
Alaine Haubert and Rory Foster
The faculty is dedicated to nurturing dancers in a caring and healthy environment
that not only challenges the students but improves confidence, concentration,
and overall strength and coordination.
The goal at ABI is to provide intensive instruction in a wide variety of
dance classes in order to fine-tune, condition, and provide careful coaching
for students in both the classical and contemporary repertoire of today's
great ballet companies. All ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux and variations
classes, as well as additional programs such as dance history or body conditioning
classes, are taught by former members of major dance companies--professionals
in the field who have an innate understanding of what it takes to succeed
in today's world. Within this intensive program students not only improve
markedly, but they are empowered, enriched and inspired by these world class
instructors.
Whether students are interested in overall strengthening and knowledge of
their craft or in preparing a variation for an up-and-coming competition,
ABI will give young dancers the opportunity to gain rapid mastery and confidence
in their dancing for that extra professional edge. For more information

Dance Film Announcements
A film by Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller
Unearthing a treasure trove of archival footage, filmmakers Dan Geller and
Dayna Goldfine have fashioned a dazzling and entrancing ode to the revolutionary
20th-century dance troupes that performed under the Ballets Russes banner.
Ballets Russes maps the Diaghilev-era beginnings in turn-of-the-century Paris—when
artists such as Nijinsky, Balanchine, Picasso, Matisse and Stravinsky united
in an unparalleled collaboration—to the halcyon days in the 1930s and
’40s, when the Ballets Russes astonished American audiences with artistry
never before seen, to the 1950s and ’60s when rising costs, rocketing
egos, outside competition and internal mismanagement brought the last of the
revered Ballets Russes companies to its knees. Directed with consummate invention
and infused with juicy anecdotal interviews from many of the companies’
glamorous stars, Ballets Russes treats audiences to a rare glimpse of the
remarkable dancers, choreographers, composers and designers who transformed
the face of dance for generations to come.

BEEN RICH ALL MY LIFE

tap troupe consisting of five former 1930's showgirls, now aged 84-96. These
chorus girls led the historic strike that established the American Guild
of Variety Artists for black and white performers nationwide, and are stillperforming

DESCRIPTION:
For over forty years Rudy Perez has moved,
invigorated and perplexed audiences. In the early
1960s he was hailed as a post-modern pioneer when
he was a founding member of the groundbreaking
Judson Dance Theater in New York City. Today he
lives in Los Angeles and defies definition as he
continues to create provocative new work.
The documentary follows the engaging
give-and-take of the rehearsal of one of Rudy
Perez' signature dances, Countdown. Los
Angeles-born and now Montreal-based Victor
Quijada, a protégé of Rudy's, has come to learn
and perform the work. Victor graduated from the
Los Angeles High School for the Arts. He was a
member of the Rudy Perez Dance Ensemble when
Twyla Tharp recruited him to join her company in
New York. After five years with the Twyla Tharp
Dance Company, he joined Montreal's Les Grands
Ballets Canadiens. He currently is the
choreographer and Artistic Director of
Rubberbanddance Group.
Throughout the rehearsal process, Rudy's life and
career are revealed through evocative home
movies, rare stock footage of New York, and
visually exciting experimental films. Interviews
with dance critics, former dancers and
collaborators give a context to Rudy's impact on
the East and West Coast dance scene. Archival
videos showcase significant selections from
Rudy's extensive body of work. The documentary
concludes with Victor Quijada performing an
emotionally powerful version of Countdown.

Great Women Choreographers of Europe
Die Grosse Fuge by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker
Fantasie by Sasha Waltz
Groosland by Maguy Marin
Fri-Sat, Oct 20-21 at 8pm
Royce Hall, UCLA
Described by The New York Times as “astonishingly original,” France’s
Lyon Opera Ballet vaulted to international fame
with Cendrillon, choreographer Maguy Marin’s shocking remake of the
Cinderella fairytale.
Under the visionary direction of Greek-born Yorgos Loukos, the company has
radically re-envisioned the dance repertory,
acting as a virtual showcase for today’s most innovative neoclassic
and post-modern choreographers.
Their Royce Hall program includes Marin’s whimsical Groosland, featuring
20 dancers wearing padded costumes
designed to make them look endearingly fat, set to J.S. Bach’s second
Brandenburg Concerto. Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s
brilliant Die Groose Fugue is performed to Beethoven’s score and features
eight male dancers. And Sasha Waltz’s first ever
collaboration with Lyon Opera Ballet, Fantasie features nine dancers performing
to a classical music score to be announced.

and directors from around the world. The program offers international works
drawing on ballet, modern, jazz and world dance, including explorations of
choreography for the camera, films using animation and digital techniques,
and dance documentaries.
Directed by UCI Dance faculty member John Crawford, this annual festival features
a diverse selection of films that merge choreographic forms with cinematic
techniques, filling the screen with the emotional presence and kinetic power
of dance. Choreography made specifically for the camera embraces the potential
of film and video technology to transcend the ephemeral nature of dance performance,
creating new perspectives of bodies in motion.

KAGEMI - Beyond the Metaphors of Mirrors
Fri-Sat, Nov 17-18 at 8pm
Royce Hall, UCLA
Harnessing remarkable physical agility and astonishing athleticism, these
second-generation Butoh dancers
from Japan electrify the stage with intensely emotional movement expressing
the deepseated language of the body and soul.
At the heart of Artistic Director Ushio Amagatsu’s transcendent new
work is the desire to extract beauty and meaning from our existence on earth.
Alternating between shade and light, seven male dancers float through an onstage
dream world of giant lotus flowers and
shifting forms of sand and water to hypnotically evoke the human being as
a mirror of nature.

Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands - Ahmanson Theatre
In Association with Center Theatre Group
Matthew Bourne is back with his latest creation - a magical new adaptation
of the classic Tim Burton motion picture. A treat for all the family, this
touching and witty gothic fairytale tells the story of a boy created by an
eccentric inventor who dies leaving him alone and unfinished. Left with only
scissors for hands, Edward must find his place in a strange new suburban world
where the well-meaning community struggles to see past his appearance to the
innocence and gentleness within.
After global success with his inspired interpretations of Swan Lake, Cinderella,

Edward Scissorhands, creating a new modern classic.
