The Southern California Dance Connection
Fall Issue, No. 8
August 15, 2007
Dear subscribers of SCDC,
This issue is dedicated to the memory of Stanley Holden, who passed away on May 11, 2007. I was fortunate to have had Stanley's company classes when I was a dancer with American Ballet Theatre and on tour in California in the late 1980s, and remember fondly his excellent teaching, warm personality and wonderful sense of humor (which is ALWAYS a plus for that first morning class!) I know many of you share your own fond stories and memories of Stanley, and I think you will find Howard Ibach's article in this issue, "My Friend Stanley," to be a sensitive portrait of a highly loved man and extremely influential artist and teacher.
With Stanley's passing I am reminded again of the incredible talent that graces our dance world here in Southern California. So many amazing artists choose to make Southern California their home and give so much of themselves, enriching dance and life for dancers and artists of all ages. We live in an area of extremely fertile ground for dance exploration, and I feel so fortunate to be a part of the legacy that people like Stanley Holden have helped to build--student by student, audience member by audience member, dance by dance.
Thank you for your support of SCDC.

My friend Stanley
by Howard Ibach

I rather doubt I can speak for anyone but me, but perhaps others in
the dance community who danced for Stanley Holden, took his classes
regularly, or even just once; met him socially, or knew him for
decades, perhaps someone out there will find something familiar in my
meager words about this man whom I came to love and admire and
respect and whose friendship I cherished. And whom I miss terribly.
I knew him a mere eight years. In a lifetime that spanned nearly four
score years, that is a blink of an eye. Yet I'm grateful for that
brief time.
There wasn't a single occasion when we spoke, face to face or over
the phone, that he didn't make me laugh. Or share something about
himself from his past. Stanley was always giving me something, even
when I didn't realize it. That's the mark of a natural teacher.
His first gift came in 1998, the day I met him at Conjunctive Points.
I was just undertaking the task of producing the first LA Dance
Invitational, and someone more experienced than I in the LA dance
community suggested that I had to get a piece of choreography from
Stanley Holden.
Stanley who? I'd never heard of him. Such was my state of ignorance.
I'm usually rather fearless, so making the trek to Conjunctive Points
was nothing special. I hovered outside his classroom, which was
packed with dancers, and the experience left me a bit, well, nervous.
I'd never met a ballet legend before (I did a bit of homework before
arriving, so I knew something about the man now). I expected to be
intimidated; I expected that when I was "allowed" into his "presence"
I'd be treated brusquely, made to rush, come, come, what is it, I'm a
busy man.
Boy was I wrong. He insisted I call him Stanley almost before I could
get the words "Mr. Holden" out of my mouth. Then he really impressed
me. When I asked him if he'd agree to choreograph a short piece of
ballet for a brand new showcase that was to benefit at-risk youth, he
said yes. Without a moment's hesitation.
He didn't know me from John Q. Public. But he said yes.
That was in December 1998. Our first concert was four months later,
and it was severely panned in the LA Times. I often wondered whether
Stanley had second thoughts about agreeing to such a risky venture.
I never asked him about it. I never asked him why he chose me or my
concert. And he never volunteered an explanation or a reason.
But he continued his affiliation with us every year after being part
of the inaugural event as an invitee. The second year, he agreed to
serve on the adjudication jury. And did he ever make his presence
felt. The chemistry and the electricity in the room were palpable.
Between Jamie Nichols, Richard Kuller, Ramon del Barrio, and me
playing referee, well, we should have video taped the gathering. We
argued, we discussed, we listened, we watched submissions from all
over LA, and we bonded.
Again in the third year, and every year since, Stanley took part of
the annual viewing of the submission tapes. He was very much looking
forward to being part of the jury again this year.
In 2001, his third year as an adjudicator, we surprised him by not
only giving him LADI's first distinguished teaching award. As is now
common knowledge in the community, we named the award in his honor.
Today, the Stanley Holden Award for Distinguished Teaching is an
established institution, and I believe a coveted award.
Stanley was always very proud of this honor, and pointed to the heavy
jade cut-glass statue on his bookcase whenever I visited him and his
wife Judy. He was equally uneasy whenever I pressed him for his
advice on whom we should select for the annual Holden Award. He never
wanted anyone to think we were picking his favorites, and rarely gave
me a direct answer. That was Stanley. Always quick with a joke, but
very serious on matters that touched him deeply.
Today, as we prepare to present the 8th annual LA Dance Invitational:
A Tribute to Stanley Holden, this little dance party has
metamorphosed into a concert of the highest quality and esteem in the
dance community. An achievement beyond my wildest dreams and hopes.
And I owe Stanley a debt of gratitude. His continuing gift to me, to
his friends Richard and Jamie, who have been the heart and soul of
LADI from the beginning, and to everyone associated with LADI, is the
credibility and stature that only a Stanley Holden could bring to an
event like ours.
I hope we can continue to live up to that approval, Stanley. We could
not have done it without you.
It is a gift I will never forget.

LA Dance Invitational
A Brief Biography of Stanley Holden
Stanley Holden was considered the finest and funniest character dancer in Royal Ballet history. Stanley Holden left us too soon when he died at age 79 on May 11, 2007. He bestowed upon his friends, family and fellow dancers an unyielding dedication to excellence and an infectious celebration of life and dance. Stanley Holden was an acclaimed character dancer in Britain's Royal Ballet and a respected teacher to generations of Southern California dancers for nearly 30 years at his Stanley Holden Dance Center in Los Angeles. He was sought out by such dance luminaries as ABT's Gelsey Kirkland, Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov when they toured Los Angeles. At the Royal Ballet, he created roles in John Cranko's "Harlequin in April" (1951) and Frederick Ashton's "La Fille Mal Gardee" (1960) and "Enigma Variations" (1968). When he retired in 1969, he received a 25-minute standing ovation at the Royal Opera House after dancing his famous role of Widow Simone in "Fille." For the last 12 years, Holden had taught at the California Dance Theatre in Agoura Hills.

SonneBlauma Danscz Theatre presents a master class with Christina Tague in Shinui
Shinui Martial Dance is an evolution and synthesis of dance, movement, martial and spiritual arts. Shinui is a dance form, which naturally is about movement, about self-expression and about the joy of being in ones body but it is also about learning to know oneself and how to be in relationship with a partner and with a group. By using the dance as a conscious exploration, Shinui provides an opportunity to examine ones expression of self and the dynamic which emerges from the meeting of two individuals. It is practice centered on the art of meeting and relationship.

Slow Dancing
West Coast Premiere
Created by David Michalek
September 18-26 6pm-12am
Public Exhibition (Free)
Los Angeles Music Center Plaza
Dance at the Music Center proudly presents the West Coast premiere of Slow Dancing. An outdoor installation of larger-than-life, hyper-slow-motion video portraits of extraordinary dance artists from around the world. Also being presented by New York's Lincoln Center, Slow Dancing simultaneously captures the beauty of the body in motion, while exposing its most intricate nuances. Projected on 16 foot screens, each subject's movement (approximately 5 seconds) was shot on a specially constructed set with a high-speed, high-definition camera recording at 1,000 frames per second. The result is approximately 10-minutes of extreme slow movement-a motion portrait in which the dancer's unique artistic expression and technique are revealed as never before. Slow Dancing features over 30 of today's foremost modern and ballet artists, as well as recognized master interpreters of a range of traditional and contemporary dance forms, including "krump" artist Christopher "Lil C" Toler, "Crutchmaster" Bill Shannon, Bill T. Jones, Desmond Richardson, Shen Wei, Allegra Kent, ABT's Herman Cornejo and Isabelle Guerin, to name a few. |
