The Southern California Dance Connection
Spring Issue, No. 3
January, 2006

Welcome back to SCDC! It is hard to believe that more than a year has passed since the last issue came out and I am hopeful that the newsletter will be issued on a much more consistent basis from now on.

As you all know, the newsletter consists mostly of submissions from its members, and I thank all who contributed this time around for helping to bring interesting dance events to all SCDC members. If you did not submit a listing for this issue, please feel free to send me your listing for the June issue, which will cover dance events from beginning of June-August/September. These submissions can be related to performances, dance classes, auditions, master classes, etc, or can be as simple as a link to a dance webpage you think important. Please forgive me if I overlooked a performance or event occuring this spring and send me the updated info as soon as you can--I will at least update this newsletter as it appears on my website.

This current newsletter is mostly a performance calendar for January-May 2006, with certain events (summer programs, competitions, etc) listed at the beginning. I have also created the performance calendar in PDF, in case you want to download and print this information separately.
Once again, I think the performances and dance events occuring this spring really speak to the vibrant and rich dance community of Southern California.

OK, enjoy the newsletter and I thank you for your support of SCDC.
Sincerely,
Lorin Johnson, Editor

Summer Intensive Programs and Dance Workshops

  • American Ballet Intensives announces its upcoming workshop at Orange County High School of the Arts, Santa Ana, CA from April 10 -14, 2006.
American Ballet Intensives announces its upcoming workshop at THE STUDIO for Performing Arts Malibu, Malibu CA April 17 to April 21, 2006.

American Ballet Intensives is an intensive ballet workshop providing serious students the opportunity to study with professionals in the field. The benefits are numerous and include: a customizable program to fit each individual school, an ideal format for younger dancers preparing for their first summer intensive, or for advanced dancers seeking a "pre-summer brush-up" for their technique, small class sizes to facilitate individual attention, live piano accompaniment, and the prestigious world-class faculty of Warren Conover, Melissa Hale Coyle, Steven Hyde, Lorin Johnson, Charles Maple, Colleen O'Callaghan, Michael Roberts, Amy Rose, and Denise Warner-Limoli.
The faculty is dedicated to nurturing dancers in a caring and healthy environment that not only challenges the students but improves confidence, concentration, and overall strength and coordination.
The goal at ABI is to provide intensive instruction in a wide variety of dance classes in order to fine-tune, condition, and provide careful coaching for students in both the classical and contemporary repertoire of today's great ballet companies. All ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux and variations classes, as well as additional programs such as dance history or body conditioning classes, are taught by former members of major dance companies--professionals in the field who have an innate understanding of what it takes to succeed in today's world. Within this intensive program students not only improve markedly, but they are empowered, enriched and inspired by these world class instructors.
Whether students are interested in overall strengthening and knowledge of their craft or in preparing a variation for an up-and-coming competition, ABI will give young dancers the opportunity to gain rapid mastery and confidence in their dancing for that extra professional edge. The class starts with simple exercises to explore the dancer’s relationship to the floor, allowing the floor to become our partner as well as a trampoline into the space. Some of the main themes explored in class are the transfer of energy and movement through the skeleton, creation and riding of momentum, gravity, and initiating from the extremities while maintaining a strong center. Dancers will explore how to organize movement in their bodies to find more efficient pathways and move faster in and out of the floor and into the space. Ultimately, speed, changes in dynamics, and intention come together as we play with energetic, deeply physical movement. Bring kneepads for floor work.

Description: As part of its 25th Anniversary Season, Benita Bike’s DanceArt Company brings an engaging modern dance program to Los Angeles Mission College on Saturday, February 11, 12:30 p.m.
Have you always wondered how a dance is made? Do they start with the music...or the movement...or an idea? And how do they remember all that stuff? Come to our special dance performance and learn how it’s done. Our choreographer and dancers will tell you all their secrets! See some great dancing and talk with our artists!
This Los Angeles Mission College program will feature "Angels and Wantons," and "Between Heaven & Earth – In Search of the Spirit." "Angels and Wantons" focuses on the complex nature of women. It is accompanied by dancers’ whispers, medieval vocal and Baroque instrumental music. "Between Heaven & Earth – In Search of the Spirit" is a mystical, mesmerizing quintet set to three vocal expressions of faith: a Muslim call to prayer, a Sudanese chanting of the Koran, and one of Hildegard von Bingen’s musical devotions.

Description: Debut U.S. tour! England’s acclaimed, compellingly innovative Stan Won’t Dance seamlessly blends bold text, high-octane choreography, and striking video. Set in a pub before something momentous happens, the ensemble’s new work, Sinner, delves into the mind of London’s infamous “nail bomber.” Exploring but never excusing what leads a man down the path of hatred, Sinner plumbs the depth of violence and alienation that exploded in poor, immigrant and gay neighborhoods across London in 1999.
Created by former members of DV8 Physical Theatre Rob Tannion and Liam Steel with playwright Ben Payne, the production at the Skirball, part of the company’s U.S. premiere, features Steel and Ben Wright, who played the Prince in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake.

Description: “... a dream universe where the many beams of light create an impression of infinite space” – Frédérique Doyon, Le Devoir
Montréal Danse returns to the Luckman with a bang – literally! – three works from Big Bang, a signature program from the company’s risk-taking repertoire incorporating shorter pieces by emergent international choreographers. Opening the performance is The Heavens, Burning with Hours (José Navas, Venezuela), a high-energy duet. Next, Désirabilis (Karine Ponties, Belgium) is an amusing, absurdist quartet; the poignant quintet One Second (Ae-Soon Ahn, Korea), set to the piano music of John Adams, closes this evening of avant-garde contemporary dance.
